yourself. all the clouds gathering there. that is a frontal system that is poised to bring us a very cold air mass. in fact, you can see on our water vapor map here there's that low. a bunch of cold air moving in our direction, so that cold blast is on the way. it looks like it will be in the north bay tuesday and then the rest of the bay area wednesday, thursday, and friday, and just to give you a sense of just how cold it's going to be, if we could go back to my map, livermore tomorrow only 67. check out tuesday, wednesday, thursday, friday. only in the low 50s. a dramatic drop in temperatures. we'll talk more about the forecast coming up. >> all right, lee. thank you. developing news. san francisco police say a man was shot and killed today while trying to sell a video game system. a man was found shot inside a car along bay shore boulevard near gerald avenue. investigators say the victim had an on-line posting to sell the system. the two men around 3:30 this

afternoon faked an exchange. the robber took the system, then shot the victim several times. police vabt made any arrests. sflimplts there was a fire on 580 today in oakland when a recently restored 1979 volkswagen bug exploded into flames. the passerby shot this cell phone video. fire happened about 9:30 on the 580 connector to eastbound 24. an off duty firefighter pulled the mother and three children in the bug to safety. one lane of 508 was closed for a short time. new details tonight about the palo alto man being held in north korea. 85-year-old merrill newman was a careeran war veteran. today we learned he served in a secret armed forces group called the white tigers. abc 7 news reporter lillian kim has those details. lillian. >> merrill newman's role in the white tiger to train anti-communist guerrillas. this photo shows him posing with some of the members in south korea decades after the korean

war. newman reportedly visited south korea twice in the past ten years. in his videotaped apology released by north korean state media friday night, newman accepts responsibility for helping anti-communist guerrillas. the guerrilla unit was called a regiment named after a north korean mountain where the guerrillas sought refuge. many are now questioning why newman went to north korea given his role during the korean war. one fellow white tiger believes newman went to do a favor for his former guerrillas. >> i think some of those people indicated they may have had relatives still living in north korea, and they probably asked him would he try to find those and maybe talk to those people and let them know what the condition of their family was, so the results of that, that led to him seeking some of those people in north korea and relating to those people picking them up off the plane and detaining them at the present time. >> in newman's hometown of palo alto, residents have tied yellow ribbons outside the retirement community where he and his wife lived.

he has been detained for nearly five weeks. the swedish embassy is working with north korea in an effort to get newman released. in the newsroom lillian kim, abc 7 news. zimplgt a new law begins next year that is aimed at protecting mountain lions if they pose no immediate threat to people. it passed after two cubs were shot in san mateo county last year. wildlife groups talked about the new law in san mateo county. >> people gathered not far from here today to remember the sad incident involving those two mountain lion cubs that were shot and killed. they want to celebrate a new law that protects the animals. >> richard won't forget the day a year ago when two mountain lion cubs wandered into his neighborhood and were shot and killed by wardens who thought they posed a threat. >> it didn't seem that it was necessary to kill them, and we need to do everything we can to

protect these animals. >> there are opportunities and options now that weren't available last year. >> reporter: state senator jerry hill says the killing of the cubs sparked so much public outrage, it prompted him to propose legislation requiringed game wardens to use nonlethal alternatives to capture big cats unless they pose an immediate threat. the law doesn't take affect until january 1st, but has already been used by game wardens. >> we have seen it work in san jose, santa cruz, and los angeles where they have already relocated mountain lions that probably would have been killed otherwise. >> many gathered in half-moon bay to celebrate the victory. the new law means more collaboration with wildlife groups like the mountain lion foundation. >> we still live in a state that has lions, and that's exciting, and there's a lot of people who feel the same way, and they want to keep these cats around, whatever it takes. >> reporter: the state department of fish and wildlife supports the new law, but a spokesman tells abc 7 news we're trying to find middle ground where we can relocate animals

where they don't bother other residents. mountain lion sightings are common in san mateo county. many hope the new law means they'll continue to see more of these big cats from a safe distance. in san mateo county, cornell bernard, abc 7 news. a mountain lion sighting this morning in woodside has led to a warning from authorities. the big cat was spotted near razorback ridge trail in the windy hills preserve. residents are being warned not to approach the animals if they see them. good news for san francisco bay. the water is getting clearer, but that means more algae is reporting. slush dating back to the gold rush, 150 years ago, has mostly washed out to sea. sunlight now shines deeper into the bay, causing algae to grow. reducing growth could saw local sewage treatment plans $10 million. scientists believe the plants might have to reduce how much nitrogen and fors forrous they

release. county supervise will consider building a memorial park in honor of a teenager killed by a deputy. he was shot in late october by a deputy who mistook his bb gun for an assault rifle. activists recently planted a young oak tree near the site where lopez was shot. state lawmakers say they will introduce legislation next month to ban the manufacture and sale of imitation firearms. an oakland gender-neutral teen is excited about returning to school tomorrow. 18-year-old sasha fleschman was sleeping on an ac transit bus last month when a teenager set fleschman's skirt on flier. flesch man, who identifies as neither female nor male, suffered second and third degree burns to the legs. fleschman is okay. police say the attack was partially because of homophobia. planned parenthood is opening a clinic in north fair oaks tomorrow despite opposition.

1,500 people have signed a petition opposing the clinic. planned parenthood said the clinic on elcamino royale will provide medical, not surgical abortions. a public outcry towards planned parenthood to back off establishing a clinic in redwood city. world aids day was celebrated locally at the national aids memorial grove in san francisco's golden gate park. more than 600 people gathered for today's ceremonies. the founder of the black aids institute said those who succumb to the disease should not have died in vein. >> every man that's in that cirquele, for every person who is naemed or not named who has been lost to this disease, we owe it to them to bring about the end of this epidemic. >> he was referring to the growth circle of friends. the ceremony was concluded with supporters gathering for the reading of the names of those embraced into the circle. still ahead on abc 7 news at 6:00, why oakland airport has seen a huge decline of flyers

fewer people are flying through oak willed airport than just a few years ago. today's chronicle reports traffic has dropped by five million people. that's compared to 2007. some industry insiders believe 2007 was a turning point. that's from virgin america launched from -- fellow southwest and jetblue both began serving sfo. the drop in passengers came after oakland airport spent a half million dollars upgrading its terminal. and dogs like this adorable one will help spread holiday cheer at sfo starting this week. san francisco spca volunteers will walk through the terminals with the dogs and encourage people to pet them. it includes eight certified

more people shopped this weekend than last year. however, they spent less money. today the national retail federation reported 141 million shoppers. compared to 1239 million in 2012. they spent $407 each, down $16 from last year. that total is more than $57 billion in sales this year. and here's what they bought. 57% purchased clothing. 37% bought electronics. 23% bought toys. 29% got gift cards, and 17% bought jewelry. defiance. the makers of seracha sauce have reacted after a judge ordered part of their plant near los angeles to close. a banner reads "no tear gas made

here." the judge also ordered the plant to reduce the odors coming from the facility. it processes 100 million pounds of peppers each year. a neighbor claimed odored from the plants have caused headaches, watery eyes, and a burning sensation in their throat. the plant points out it passed a recent air quality inspection. police at one police station in los angeles produced their own youtube video hoping to keep people from becoming victims of car breakins. it shows zombies breaking into cars. officers and community volunteers acted m video. the lapd says the message is simple. if you lock your car, hide your stuff, you'll deter thieves and likely keep your stuff. let's get to lee glassman here. a big hang in store for us

weather-wise. >> i hope everyone bought coats this last weekend when you are out shopping. you're definitely going to need them. we have a mainly clear sky. high clouds here and there. it is right to the north of us well up in the gulf of alaska where a parcel of very cold air is sitting and that is going to be visiting the bay area as we head into monday night, tuesday, wednesday, thursday, friday, saturday. maybe even entering into sunld as well. maybe a little bit of moisture. here's a nice shot. you can see for yourself, temperatures, this time of year mild, most highs today. upper 6 0z, near 70 degrees. oakland, 60. 58, los gados. s a nice shot. sanity why rosa, 60. 55 in fairfield. livermore still at 60 degrees. we have a look at our forecast highlights for you. it is going to get colder

tomorrow, and we're going to keep a chance of a few light showers mainly in the north bay. cold and windy through the rest of the workweek, and freeze warnings are more than likely to be issued as we get into wednesday morning, thursday morning as well as friday morning. let's go ahead and take a look at overnight lows for tonight. we'll bring them up a little bit because we will continue to do some of the high clouds move in. especially chilly in the north bay with temperatures there in the 30s. 40s elsewhere. let's go ahead and take a look at this system. right here in the gulf of alaska, this is where the area of low pressure is. this is the trailing cold front. most of the moisture from the system will face to the north of us, but let's go ahead and drag this south. this is 3:00 monday afternoon, and you can already see a little moisture moving down towards cloverdale and then by 8:00 tomorrow evening you can see the cloud cover.

mainly being able to ring out a few showers north of the golden gate bridge. really going to be tuesday when that massive cold air starts to move south. the wind will pick up, and because of all the instability, we'll keep showers in our accuweather forecast as well. how cold you ask? well, here's the trend. -- once again in livermore, tomorrow you're going to be a nice comfortable 67. check out thursday. 54. you couple that with very strong winds out of the north, and we are going to be talking about wind chill factors most definitelying. san jose, let's not forget about you. 66 tomorrow, and then wednesday, 52. 53, 55. you kind of get the story here. definitely cold air on the way. tomorrow we'll go with 60s across much of the bay area. we'll put a chance of some showers mainly in the north bay.
